Question Back after 14 years...from upright to bass guitar...help!

A violin convert after I saw the light in 8th grade, I played (mostly classical) extensively in the local Youth Symphony Orchestra, high school orchestra, stage band, Governor's school, college and community orchestra...then quit (duh!) when I went back to graduate school.

An overwhelming urge I cannot explain brought be back to the instrument recently, after 14 years. I rented an instrument, held my breath and dragged out the Simandl. I can't believe how fast it all came back. After a few weeks I took the plunge and joined the local community orchestra. What joy! How fun!

My husband is adapting nicely to loaning me his Explorer on Mondays (um, I drive a 2-seater convertible) and having bass stuff all over the house.

So, I need help please...I need instrument advice, specifically on a bass guitar. I've never played one but the jazz band could use a player and I'm curious. Plus, it's easier to transport!

I'm thinking acoustic-electric for maximum flexibility (my husband is a beginning acoustic guitar player.) I have no desire to join a rock band or anything...seems nice to be able to play without an amp...

Fretted? Fretless? Manufacturer? Features? Considerations for a female player? (I am 5'6", small frame but long arms) I want a decent starter instrument but since I don't know if I will continue, I would prefer not to put a lot of money into it...

...the upright bass, on the other hand...that I will spend on...

Thanks for yor time!

Welcome back!
I can relate, I took a 20 year break.
There are a few Acoustic/Electric Basses that can be had in the $150-250 range. Best thing to do is to get to as many stores as possible and try as many as you can.
I cheaped out and got a Hondo H-1000 for $150 and it suits my purposes well.
Really wish that I had the dough for that $500 Michael Kelly. It is SWEEEEEEEET.

If you're going to go electric i would highly recomend a solid body. you can't go wrong with a basic Fender Jazz or P-bass (you can usually find a good used one at a reasonable price).
