I recently attended a bass workshop presented by Michael Hartery at the University of North Texas. Michael is a very fine classical bass player and fine luthier. I think these are the best qualification for a luthier. The idea for the workshop was to be able to develop some skills and tools that would help with some of the more common repairs needed for the bass. Open seams was number one on the list. To that end, we made some bass clamps and learned the basics about hide glue and glued some seams. Michael also taught us about bridge fitting, positoning and sound post position. There is some logic to the functionality of the various bass parts and getting to know how they work together removed some of the mystery I used to feel when it came to setting up my bass. Michael supplied a chunk of walnut and I was able to carve a tailpiece from it. It's graduated and it definitly improved my sound. I think it turned out very well. I have included some pictures.
