Bitten off more than i can chew?

Hi guys,

been playing (4 string fretted) for about 12 years now. practiced intensely while i was 17/18 and totally messed up my a-level exams as a result! Been in various bands ever since but lost some of my enthusiasm as i seemed to reach a plateau with my playing, and also as i got into more electronica and drum-heavy music.

However, for a certain 'special' birthday my girlfriend recently surprised me with a trip to a friend's workshop in Yorkshire and a very generous contribution towards a custom bass! It's going to take several months to build but i am getting very excited. To be honest the whole process of choosing the wood and electronics and everything has re-kindled my interest in everything bass.

While waiting patiently for my lovely new guitar, i have decided to go back to basics and try and learn some theory and good technique. I have also never been able to read music so i thought this would be as good a time as any to learn so have invested in some books. Although technically i am not a bad bassist, it's quite scary when you try things like supportive fingering and it's almost impossible! i have a lot to learn. I'd also really like to try to get to grips with 3 finger plucking and more advanced stuff like that.

I am slightly concerned that i might have bitten off more than i can chew with my choice of bass, however. I wanted something completely different so went for a 6 string fretless (eek). bit worried it's going to be a massive jump from my 4 string fretted and i'll be totally out of my depth so if anyone's got any advice, tips or recommendations that would be ace. sorry i've waffled on a bit! cheers guys...

p.s. This is the website of the luthier that's making my bass if anyone's interested: http://www.guitarrepairman.co.uk/ (he does repairs too).
