Bohmann 4 and 5 string basses

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everybody!

I got turned on to researching Joseph Bohmann about a year ago and hear some of his string basses were phenomenal. He made 4 and 5 string basses; the 5 strings were designed differently and were not converted from 4 string basses.

Also, I recently saw a wooden tail piece that came from the Bohmann factory that only had 3 holes in the top. Can anyone explain why a bass tailpiece would only have 3 pieces in it? I am unfamiliar with the string bass.

I want to correspond with any and everyone who can give me information on Bohmann's bass instruments, or who can direct me to an expert on string basses.

Thank you for any help.

All the Best,

Hambone Dude

Hi,

A customer just bought their Bohmann in for adjustment. I posted some photos and a description on our website in the section named Archive of Recent Sales on our website.

I think that Bohmann might have been more of an importer than a manufacturer. He is known for mandolins, etc. and his name appears in the Samuel Eden auction reference book on this list of "fictitious violin & bowmaker names."

good luck, Michael Spadaro
