Hey guys,
My name is Jim, I'm from South Carolina. I play a left-handed Douglas 6-string I bought from RondoMusic.com.
Started with a 6 because knowing nothing about bass, thought I would get more for my money with more strings, and had no idea I was ordering a behemoth compared to my guitars. After much pain and hours practicing I got really comfortable playing it anyway, then modified it to my liking and now I don't think I'll be getting any other basses for quite some time. Have never really tried any 4 or 5 strings since they don't usually have lefties in the music store.
I play in a project called 'Human Beansauce'. It's a bass & drums duo with Andy Plemmons. We have a myspace for the project: http://www.myspace.com/humanbeansauce so you can check out songs/videos if you'd like.
Hope to make some new friends on here --should be easy since we all have one thing in common ...

I always assumed they were cheaper off-brand types, but haven't really felt the need to change them yet.

When I got the bass, the strap post on the top horn was at about the 14th or 15th fret, so unless I cradled the bass sitting down, I'd have to hold the neck up with my fretting hand to keep it from just falling down. I played like this for the first couple of years but found it hard to move around the fretboard freely and I prefer standing so I cut the horn off about halfway, made a longer one and attached it. This newer one puts the strap post at the 12th fret, and now the bass is balanced standing up. It's much easier to play this way. Both hands can move freely without having to hold the neck up. I painted the body flat black and reshaped the headstock more to my liking, and was done. Other than that haven't really done anything to it because pickups are expensive.
I think the pickups now are two single coils wired together like a humbucker but with the option of just selecting just one or the other. I'm not even sure though...
If ever I have a lot of money for buying pickups, I think I'd get either a q-tuner or an alumitone for the neck, and some sort of heavy humbucker for the bridge. Not too worried about it for now though.

Welcome aboard!
