Smile Cello playing NOOB...

Sign in to disble this ad
hey everybody... second post... hoping for many more

i am definitely not new to music in general... i have played the cello for 6 years and the piano for even longer.. i love its sound and its (seeming) similarity to the cello so i am getting very serious about purchasing one. i have a bassist friend but he cant answer some of my questions...

My piano teacher who would be the one to start me on lessons has said that it would be better to begin learning on a "regular" guitar.. this upset me as i wanted to jump right in... is this necessary?

Is it really at all similar to the cello, besides being a four-stringed instrument?

recommended bass between 100-200 dollars and cheap practice amp?

thanks a ton everyone!
i appreciate it and look forward to learning more about this amazing instrument

can't compare a cello to a bass for ya, but to suggest you start on guitar instead of bass if you want to play bass is the same as suggesting you take a trip to Mars when you really want to go to the moon -- make NO sense at all. What kind of teacher do you have?

As for a "cheap" bass amp, if you want BIG and cheap, look for used Peavey Combo's on Craigslist. usually get them under $200 no problem. If you want a small, cheap and good practice amp, look for a Peavey Microbass. Of all the teeny tiny bass amps I have tried, this is by far the best for the money and the sound you will get out of it. This is not to say I am some sort of Peavey fan, but those would be your best choices.

shes a piano teacher mostly and her reasoning had something to do with learning melodies first ???

not sure i understand what confuses you about the bass. I am assuming that the srings on a cello are bass cleff, and are they set up EADG? if that is the case, the move to bass should be fairly easy as you are in the same cleff, with fingerings the same, only your distances on the fretboard will increase.

btw, you talkin' upright or electric bass here?

im sorry though i meant to say which basses should i look at for purchasing, this is whats confusing me, not the bass itself
