Hi. I bought my first bass in 1978, a new Fender Musicmaster for the sum of $182.00 at Boston Music. Bass guitar has been close to my heart ever since.
I have a love for the pyro-technics of such bassists as Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Harris, and one for the gentler and more receptive tones of Mark Egan and Leland Sklar.
I guess a good common ground for me is bassist Bruce Hall of REO Speedwagon. (Listen to his work in song "In My Dreams").
It seems to me that the best bassists know how to work with expectation, that is, to play something contextually pertanent, but unusual or unexpected. Sometimes, this is a timing mechanism. Sometimes, a note choice.
I seek to learn to play with less ego and intensity. In that way, the bass, for me, is a spiritual barometer.
"I admired many of my peers-[...],and Jack Bruce, who appealed to me because he was also playing melodies with a vengance." -Jack Casady-
