First bass at 54

Hello...My husband -- a jazz guitarist -- bought me a 4-string Fender bass for my recent 54th birthday. This is not only my first guitar, it's the first instrument I will attempt to play...ever. So wish me luck!

enigmajean,

I just started learning to play in June of this year at the age of 48. It has taken until this week to even feel like I am making progress, but I can now play along with a CD as long as I can see the guitar chords on the sheet music. Oh sure, I am just banging away on the root notes...but man, is this ever fun! I am having the time of my life learning something I have always wanted to do! Hope you have as much fun as I am having

Was just wishing I had somebody to share the fun with and read your threat...thought I'd pass on some encouraging words to another "experienced" person unwilling to settle for sitting and watching life happen.

It will likely feel pretty discouraging for a few weeks, but it will get better. Hang in and keep working at it!

Don't give up. it will take a couple of months of stinking but then you'll get over that hill and make a ton of progess and love it.

best of luck. enjoy the bass, i'm sure it will bring you a lot of peace and happiness as it has so many of us.

jean: I fooled around with electric bass for a time when I was younger.

But it wasn't until I hit 62 that I decided to become a bassist. I had been playing bluegrass banjo and realized there are a lot of good banjo players out there, but if you're a bass player you'll always find a place in a band.

I'm 63 now and I play bluegrass bass on an upright electric bass with an acoustic amp. And I'm going to start my own band in the next 6 months.

It's something I always wanted to do, and now that I'm doing it, I wish I hadn't waited so long.

I also do harmonic vocals and I'm gearing up to do some lead vocals.

Damn, I'm havin' fun.
