Smile Gday from Jas on Bass in Australia

Hi All,

Firstly, great forum you guys have here, I've been reading as much as I can & the range of advice/opinions helps lots of suggestions & ideas.

My story sofar ...

I dug out my old bass about a month ago after encouragement from a drummer up the road who found out I had a bass hidden away in the cupboard - untouched for 15 years.

I did play guitar 15+ years ago and bought the bass as I had visions of writing music & playing/recording all the instruments. Then along comes family, work, etc, etc ... here we are 15 years later.

Mine is a Washburn bass which gets quite a few compliments from the guys I've been jamming with. I really don't know too much about it but have emailed Washburn to see if they can help me with any info on it - serial number: c1800548 (any suggestions welcomed). I'll get a pic up shortly.

I have also just bought a 150 watt Ashton BA150 amp which helps me from being drowned out by the others. I still have Boss overdrive & delay pedals too, which I'll experiment with at some stage.

So, I am pretty much starting from scratch here, jammed about a dozen times with guys who pride themselves on not doing covers, so I have been fumbling through & figuring out a bassline as we go and try to lock in with the drummer. I'm making a fair bit of progress, but the more I learn - the more I realise I don't know - I gotta long way to go, but I'm pretty hooked so I'm not in a made rush - just highly motivated .

I'm doing the whole scales & metronome thing, reading tabs, trying differnet techniques, seeing as many different bassists (live & online) as I can. I'm still mainly using a plectrum at this stage but I am really practicing my finger playing about 30 mins each night. I'm also grabbing Guitar Pro soon (any advice welcomed).

I am also interested in hearing about experiences with accoustic bass guitars, a few guitarist reckon they are a bit crap as they get drowned out by the accoustic guitars - any help?

I'm out in Upper Ferntree Gully - about an hour east of Melbourne, if there's any locals floating around give me a yell.

Cheers All
Jason

At the risk copping crap for bumping my own thread that nobody bothered to respond to - I feel so welcomed I've found out what model my Washburn bass is. It's one of the wing series - a 1980 scavenger.

For what it's worth-
I have a pair of Washburn MB-4 fretless basses. They are wonderful.
I also have a Taylor AB-1. It is big, a little delicate, expensive, very well built. The tone and the neck are amazing. The volume in good although it is difficult to hear ( in a jam)when you're holding it. It will not keep up with more than one or two guitars. The Tacoma is nice but......There's always a tradeoff.
