The lack of available land in Kochi has led to the present profusion of high-rise flats and apartments. This has in turn led to a new residential culture among the Keralites. Until recently, it was practically unheard of for a well-to-do family settling in a flat or apartment. But the prejudices are fast falling away and the reverse is becoming more of a reality.

The modern high-rise flats are built which an eye on the rich and the super rich and their requirements. People vie with one another to get a well located, luxury or premium apartment. A Kochi flat has become an object much coveted.

Builders compete among themselves to provide the best and most modern amenities in their projects. They woe their prospective residents with prime location, abundance of luxury facilities, quality of products used in construction and fittings, etc.

However, for the environment conscious the current high-rise residential projects are sure to be comforting. Vertical living space ensures less destruction of trees and more open space around every building. Every high-rise residential and commercial space is committed to provide a certain amount of space within their premises for greenery and landscaping. This ensures preservation of plant live and more space for open-air relaxation and recreation. In fact, every apartments building scattered around the city means that many pockets of greenery that is carefully maintained.

In these days of warnings about global warming, every human endeavor has to be consciously eco-friendly if we are to leave anything worthwhile for out future generation. Utilizing vertical space means more people can be accommodated in less land and more land left free from occupation.
