Greetings from the North Coast

This is my first post, so I hope I'm doing this correctly. I live in the Cleveland, Ohio area, where winter has finely arrived. I found the TalkBass website while searching for help starting to play upright bass. I've been playing guitar and bass guitar for years, but I'm a novice with the upright.
I'm also dealing with some function loss in the ring and little fingers of my left hand. This is due to nerve damage in my neck and arm. I had surgery on my neck a few weeks ago to relieve pressure on the nerves, but it hasn't improved the numbness in my fingers.
None the less, my intention is to keep playing at some level...if Django can do it, why not me.
I'm interested in useful information for a beginning double bass student, including technical resources on instrument setup, opinions on strings, transducers/pickups, and use of the bow, as well as hints on posture and left and right hand techniques.
I'd also like to hear from anyone dealing with physical limitations, and any tricks that may be helpful.
Of course, I am happy to provide any sage wisdom I've gathered in fourty-plus years of performing, if anyone is interested.

Namaste
