Hi Talkbass members!
I have been playing bass since I was about 15 (30 years ago), plucking out the notes to "Convoy" and "Theme from S.W.A.T" off the AM radio.....
My first bass was a Kent from Korea, a real piece of junk that I stripped the frets out of (a la Jaco) and played along to Pat Metheny's White album all summer of 1978.
When I hit Carleton University in Ottawa in 1979 I formed a punk band, played in 2 rock bands and basically played instead of studying. A drummer friend introduced me to Yes, and we jammed on that stuff for hours.
My Mom started playing jazz piano during that time also, so I started playing bass and piano with her, and that has been my favorite format my whole life.
I have played in Country, Rock, "Wedding" or occasion bands, and Big Bands. Since the birth of my first child in 2001 I bought a 1978 Englehardt upright and took lessons for 18 months.
Now I have a regular Wednesday night gig at a local Bistro that I wouldn't trade for anything! I'm lucky to have found a wonderful piano player whose playing awes me every week, and somehow I sort of keep up every other song!
It's great to have a found a forum for bassists, it looks like I have a lot to learn still, hopefully a lot here! |
