Verily, i insert myself into this evil maelstrom of low frequency vibrations! my bowels doth churn.
my name is nikolas, and i've been playing guitar for 12 years(don't make any assumptions, i refer to my abilities as "functional"). i apologize for the tl;dr-ness of my intro post.
in the past three years, my interest in bass has been piqued through my interactions with bass players that were not in high school punk bands and the random availability of bass guitars in relation to these bassists.
whereas before i viewed bass as a four stringed guitar, i now had a greater understanding of the bass as a rhythm instrument. with the somewhat recent wave of drum and bass duos like lightning bolt, and even a few of my friends' bands it was a lot easier for me to conceptualize what the bass was capable of and responsible for.
after the band i am begrudgingly involved with decided that our lo-fi acoustic indie-pop was too linear and needed fleshing out for versatility, we acquired a basic drum kit and borrowed a friend's bass. though the action on the bass was set so high we had to wrap duct tape around our fingers and use two at a time to keep a note fretted after prolonged play, i was hooked. playing bass was just fun, and it was way easier to look cool while doing so. and in any case, just about everyone plays guitar, so local scenes are always saturated by pseudo-virtuosos. bass seems more important.
pointedly, my friend harley is moving out of the south and selling off some gear, specifically an ibanez GABX and some crappy combo amp, for stupid cheap($100). i couldn't pass it up, so in two weeks i'll own a bass and an amp and i'm really looking forward to multi-instrumentalism and becoming functional, maybe even
good at playing the bass. this seems like the place to be for the knowledge base and the experienced users, so here i am!
if anyone actually reads this, i would like to know if you all have any advice for someone who is used to playing a guitar branching into a medium scale bass?
and yes, i do know how to use the search button
