My beginner's mistakes
I;m 62 and only a year and a half in to it, so I've some pointers for you. Please, whatever you do take your time. The bass is going to be around your neck for a long time and your hands in motion constantly. Comfort is very important. With the bass around your neck and not holding the bass in any way, does the neck drop lower or does it balance? You want it to balance.
Now about "A cheap bass". My experience taught me that if it is cheap in price it is likely to be cheap in quality. Not always but watch out; you'll spend more in the long run if you get a cheap bass. Save up for something just a little bit better.
Take someone who can guide you with you to the store or where the instrument is so they can look it over.
There are some good basses that don't cost an arm and a leg; so do your homework before you buy.
I hope others will add their advice too.
