Just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi to all the fellow bass heads out there.
My name is Ron, and I'm a dude in my mid-30's who's just picked up his bass again after a lo-o-ong hiatus (like, since high school). Historically, I've been one of those guys who never sticks to things for very long, but I've always loved music. A buddy and I have started playing together, and that, along with regular lessons, have kept me interested for about a year now. At this age, I'm learning things more slowly than I used to, but I'm keeping at it, and I'm getting better, and that's its own reward.
I've been involved in music since 6th grade, when I started playing the French horn. I grew up in a "churchy" household, so it wasn't until a few years later, in high school, that I discovered rock music. I started devouring Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, and other heavier bands of the era, but it wasn't until I listened to my first Rush album (Hold Your Fire) that I felt I understood what rock music was supposed to be. The way the bass cut through and drove the music forward (especially in Open Secrets) was unlike anything I'd ever heard, or would ever hear. In all other bands, the bass is the anchor, but in Rush it is the sail. Since I heard my first Geddy bassline, I've been partial to the bass guitar over all other instruments. I love its sound, its versatility, even its look. I have nothing against guitars or guitar players, but the instrument just doesn't appeal to me the way the bass does. So I guess you could say I come by my bass obsession honestly, since my introduction to it was from such a hallowed source, and it started a journey of discovery, listening to lots of other bassists who have helped move the bass out of the back line and into the limelight.
So, here's to a continuing journey...one to be shared with brothers and sisters in the low registers. I look forward to getting to know all of you as we rock it out together!
Cheers!
