Hey all!
Glad to be here ! A friend of mine kept talking about this forum and I just kept thinking (I'll check it out later...) and I finally did something about it and joined. I am a gigging bass player with two bands, and I'm also a jobber. I made the switch to fretless not too long ago, and never looked back! It seems that I don't need those "speed bumps" after all. No complaints from anyone so far.
Currently I gig with a very simple setup consisting of a MIM Fender p-bass with a MityMite Fretless neck (no fretlines!) and my trusty Eden Nemesis 2x12" combo. Occasionally I'll mess with a Boss Super Chorus, but I usually just plug straight in and get that "old school" warm sound (not much on the high end, but just "round." Playing in a three-piece, I have to be there all the time and I don't just play in the lower register. Think more of an Entwistle meets Jaco approach. Yeah that's it.
I will say this - I love the feeling of the bass, but I am not happy with the sound of it. The stock pickup is a piece of crap! As of now, I'm shopping around for a good replacement. I want passive, as I'm not a big fan of active ones. They've always had a "forced" sound to me. I'm also going to upgrade the pots, caps, etc, and put a Gotoh bridge on it (I HATE the stock MIM Fender bridges!)
I've been playing bass for 11 years and loving it. I picked it up because of my frustration with the guitar and approached it in a different way. Bass has actually helped me with playing guitar, as it has really made my rhythm chops mature with age, and to realize that leads are not the only important thing. DYNAMICS! DYNAMICS! DYNAMICS!
Anyway, that's a bit about me. |
