Hello everyone, a proud newbie here
Sooooooo, i would like to learn how to play the Bass! and luckily enough, my job sold some used ones, so i got the Dean Edge, and I hope that isn't a **** brand or something! lol, even so, i got it now, and I will make the best of it!
ummm, I saw some videos where the player had one finger per fret, but my hands are small compared to his, so, is there another technique? or can i just slide my fingers down the neck to get to the next fret? Any help would be appreciated!
A lil about myself, I am from South Carolina. I am a Poet, Rapper, and all around lover of music from Jay Z to Johnny Cash! and I just want to expand my music knowledge and all that fun stuff!
The Dean is a perfectly acceptable starter instrument.
Regarding "one finger per fret", yes, you may have to slide around a bit, especially in the lower registers. Once you get a little further in your studies, you'll learn scale shapes such as the Dorian mode, which actually requires you to cover five frets, so some sliding around becomes inevitable.
If you're finding that the size of your hands is detrimental to learning the instrument, you might consider a short scale bass. They're still "real" basses, just sized a little different, and there are a couple of them in the same price range as your Dean that have good reputations here on TB.
Welcome to the low end where we get less love than guitarists or drummers!
yeah about the small hands I had that problem too when I started. I still kinda do. Just keep practicing and stretch your fingers everyday a bit. I also find playing a bit of piano will help a lotttttttttttttt like seriously.
Never heard about Dean bass guitars so I can't say too much about it. Just be glad you got a bass guitar you like.
Thanks y'all, I am actually getting a little more used to it as I practice more and more today. BTW, what is your views on the Rock Smith game?
Welcome to TalkBass.
I personally like Dean basses. If you enjoy playing it, that's all that matters.
I have a dean bass and I love it and about rock smith it's a good game teaches you how to play bass guitar and guitar but you need to get bass edition
Yeah, i have had the Rocksmith game now for about two days, and it is helping out tremendously!! I am excited! a few songs are kicking my ass, but i know it will get better with time
