Hi all, new here.
I'm what you might want to call a 'returning' bass player. Thirteen years ago I started playing bass at age 14 when my older brother needed an electric bass player for his band. He told me bass guitar would be much easier than guitar because there were fewer strings. I don't think it's necessary to tell you he played neither instrument....
I switched over to double bass in high school when our jazz band needed a bass player. Within the next year I started playing orchestral music for the musicals put on by my High School. (Into the Woods, West Side Story and Grease). Since then I've been off and on with both instruments, but I mostly played electric when jamming with friends and double bass when I was involved with community orchestras.
I'm self taught with the exception of a few lessons when I was 19. A year ago I started playing with a community orchestra here in Madison, WI (
www.madisoncommunityorchestra.org) and remembered how much fun playing music was, so I hope to keep this as an integral part of my life!
Right now I'm working through Simandl's "new method" book I, and would like to find someone who would be willing to give me a few lessons/pointers as I go along.
I found this site while searching for ideas and thoughts about etude books. I was a bit surprised to see how divided the bassist community is over the Vance/Rabbath - Simandl/Zimmerman techniques, but even though I didn't find a definitive answer, it has still been quite informative.
Thanks to the whole community for putting together such a wonderful forum!
