Help me! Sadwosky NYC V5 or Lakland US JO 5

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Everyone!
Help me to select my new bass. I like the 70´s fender slapsound but i must have a 5 stringbass with a killer B string that you can use when you play slap. My two options is for now Sadowsky NYC V5 or Lakland US JO 5. I have a Lakland 55-02 with barts and i like that bass and love the B-string. My basses are always tuned in flats. Can anyone help me with this questions.
Best Regards
Johan

Welcome to Talkbass!

That's a nice price bracket to be in, Mullet!
If you're after the 70's sound, you're probably gonna want to get 70's pickup spacing and both of the basses you mentioned have 60's spacing. I know that you can request 70's spacing on an Ultra-Vintage NYC Sadowsky but I have yet to see a 5-string ordered like that. Obviously their Metro UV70 model is already pre-configured that way but some people just have to have an NYC!
I don't think you can order a USA JO 5 with 70's spacing. I haven't played one so I can't really comment on it.

In addition to the 70's pickup spacing, most people would consider the ash/maple wood combination to be a critical part of the 70's tone equation. If I was looking for a dead-on replication of the Marcus-type 70's tone in a 5-er, I'd get a Sadowsky UV70-MB-ASH-5 with the single coils. Lots of people rave about them single coils. I have an MV5 (ash/maple, 60's spacing, HC pups) and it gets real close but it doesn't bite your head off. Besides, if you get a Metro you can spend your remainder on Hammer pants and hypercolor tanktops! Or not.

Just out of curiosity regarding your altered tuning, do you tune up or down to your pitches?
Good luck finding a new bass!

Hi thanks for your reply!
I will check with Roger if he can make a Ultra vintage 5 NYC for me. I tune down a half step so the tuning in a fivestring bass would be like this. Bb Eb Ab Db Gb.
Thank you again for the Reply.
Best regards Johan

Hey Mullet!
Welcome to TB as well.
The best thread of post in is the "basses" thread. There are a TON of people who are personal friends with Roger, who can probably answer you before even e-mailing Roger!

If you really want to nail that 70's J sound, I'd recommend checkin out Atelier Z (dead on 70's J, much less than a Sadowsky new) and Celinder (heard alot about but never played). There's actually an Atelier Z for sale right here on TB!

+1000 on the Celinder basses. The Update J is incredble and nails the 70s sound better than a Sadowsky IMO.......Atelier Z makes a great bass as well that's easier to get and a lot cheaper........Still, if you could get your hands on a Celinder, you wouldn't be sorry about the trouble you go through to get one 9 times out of 10 (Bowlus )

Sadowsky NYC 5 v. Lakeland JO5

Hello,

I own a Sadowsky NYC 5 and a Lakland 55-94. Both great basses. You need to play them as you are dealing with different scales lengths, 34" for the Sadowsky and 35" for the Lakland. Some people can't adjust to the 35" scale.

Good luck,

At this point in time, I would not really recommend that anyone order a new Celinder. The customer service just is not there. Sadowsky just blows them away in that regard.

Tom.

Hi!
Thanks for the reply!
I left the thoughts on a sadowsky and the JO 5 an ordered a Custom Lakland 55-94 instead. Olympic White, Maple neck with blocks and bindings and Matching headstock. I went with the new pickuos and preamp LH3. Do you have any experience with those pickups? Now i just have too wait and wait and wait some more.

I have a Lakland skyline 55-02 with barts in it and really like that sound. I hope i will like the new Pickups an pre.

Best Regards
Johan
