Hey guys, a new bassist from Texas here

Sign in to disble this ad
hi everyone, I'm new to the bass, but I've been a guitar player for about 4 years. I find that I love the bass more...way more. I came across these boards while Googling Juan Alderete De La Pena, I was looking for a project of his called Big Sir.

I've been taking bass lessons for about two months now and I've learned songs from Hendrix, The Police, The Beatles, Otis Redding and Chuck Berry. I can't wait to get to Zeppelin, because the moment I can play "The Song Remains the Same" with JPJ-like proficiency, it will probably be the only thing I play for a while.

So yeah, that's where I am...hello

thanks H@tter...do you have any pedals that you use with your bass? I saw a pedal by bootsy collins in a magazine and was wondering how it altered the sound of the bass...I believe it was a wah pedal.

I've been playing for just under 10 years, but it sure seems longer than that. I can't remember much from before I started playing.

10 years, huh? I'm such a newbie, but I'm excited every time I take a bass lesson and every time I practice and every time I learn a new song. Right now my dexterity is being tested, so to speak. I find I have to stretch my fingers a lot more than I did when playing guitar, and I still struggle with the one finger per fret rule, I have to retrain my fingers entirely. Now I see why bass players get upset when people ask if playing the bass is easier than playing guitar...they're two different animals.

Welcome to the new member from Texas. As a new player you will find lots of knowledge/experience based support here. Sometimes you got to search through the weeds and thorns to find the flowers but the flowers are always here. Good luck and strong effort in your bass endeavors.

thank you, I can tell already that there's a lot of information here for me to draw on. I just got lost in a couple of threads reading up things I didn't know about, and it's cool to have this community to turn to with the million questions I have, like choosing strings and changing pickups.

I love Austin, it's a great city. I try to go there often because the live music scene can't be beat. In fact, I'm considering going to the Austin City Limits Festival in September. I missed SXSW...again so I'm thinking about making the drive there this fall.
