This is my first post. I joined because I recently started gigging again, and I haven't kept up with all of the changes in bass gear that have taken place since I last played regularly back in the 70s.
I started playing in 1967, gigged regularly during the late sixties and through the seventies. Got married, put on a suit, and quit playing in 1980. Wife passed away in '97, and I bought the 5-string and started woodshedding a few years ago.
As much as I feel an emotional connection to my tube Fender Bassman and Ampeg fliptop, they just can't cut through a noisy club. I play mostly jazz, R&B, blues. I like a clean, undistorted sound; the modern bass sound with deep bass, abundant high frequencies, and scooped-out midrange is just about the opposite of the sound I'm trying to achieve.
To give you an idea of my jazz sound, I use Thomastic-Infeld strings on my upright and fretless electric, amplified by tubes. I'm strictly fingerstyle - no pick, no hammering or thumb-style.
I've never been much of a gear head - just plug in and play. However, now that I'm middle-aged, with declining hearing and much more disposable income than I had as a kid, I want to put together an R&B rig that gives me the clean, punchy sound I've always heard through my headphones.
I've been reading good things about Demeter, Stewart, Acme, Eden, et al, but haven't heard any of it in person yet.
I guess that's it for now. |
