I'm new to the forums, just found you the other day while trying to look useful at work.

My name's Mommy....no, wait, that's my other life :-)!
I'm both a bass player, and a guitard (as you so lovingly seem to call us). I took up guitar at the age of 39 when my husband was in Iraq. I'd always wanted to play but had no musical talent (barely passed band in 6th grade) whatsoever. I was on the internet with a bottle of wine one night and bought a guitar. Learning has been slow for me because i have no background, i cant sing, cant read music (but TAB makes sense because it's a mathematical grid to me). I took some private lessons, and some group rock band lessons and ended up in the group lesson band. When the economy tanked several people quit and a few moved and it came down to just four of us. We needed a bass player more than we needed a second guitar and i had a bass already (another bottle of wine story, this one involving eBay). So i got drafted.... bass has been easier for me to get the hang of (as long as my part gets to stay pretty basic) so i play bass on most of the songs we do. i like it, but i also still like guitar. I've also taken a class on d'jembe hand drums with my son (which i found to be very helpful with my bass playing too).
We probably suck on a scale of 1-10 but we're having fun, and like my lead guitarist said on the way to our first open mic "If at the end of the night we haven't had fun, then we're doing it wrong". We're all in it for fun, we get along well and we enjoy each other and the noise we make.

Anyway, so that's me....beyond that I'm 43, have two kids (17 and 10) and i work full time in radio.

All I can say is welcome to the deep end sister! There needs to be more female bassists out there so more power to you. Just stick with it,and keep playing with people as that is the best way to learn.

Welcome to TalkBass! I moved this to the "Welcome Forum."

Nobody's amazing at first (and I'm not amazing after 20years on bass)...glad you're having fun! And, you can already say you've been on the radio.

Ahh see, i didn't manage to find the 'welcome forum', i proly had a teenager grumbling at me to turn my amp down. Thanks for moving me :-) Naw, i dont figure I"ll ever be amazing... I'm finally up to where i feel like i can actually say I'm a bass player, although I'd never say i was a musician. I think the only time one of my instruments has been on the radio was when i accidentally banged a headstock on the mic as i went to do the weather report while goofing off.
