Hello.
New guy here from Just south of Portland, OR. I have been playing Bass about 7 weeks now, and am the very definition of a NEWBIE. I am in my 12th year as an instrumental music teacher. I am a band guy, primarily brass, with my main instrument Tuba. I have always wanted to play bass, but never got the nerve to try til about 2 months ago, my HS jazz combo had no bass player, so I picked up the school's bass and gave it a try. I am self-teaching myself right now, with the help of Joel Di Bartolo's "Serious Electric Bass" and help from more knowledgeable bassists on some other forums (and this one, now.
Bought my first bass about 2 weeks ago. I had been looking at several, including the Epiphone Les Paul special and a couple Ibanez models... However when I walked into Guitar Center a couple week ago an daw the Epiphone Viola marked down on clearance from $399 to $250, that cinched my decision. I love the sound of the Epi Viola, I think it is perfect for jazz, and the looks are nice too. I like the short scale, even though I have humongous hands and arms like an orangutan. This one is a keeper, though I will of course look to expand the arsenal in the future (can't have too many instruments around). I am currently looking for an amp, as I am using the schools little 10w Crate to practice at home.
Personally, I am a father of 2, recently involuntarily divorced. Into astronomy, when I have the time, gonna wrap up my masters in Ed in August. I read a lot, when not doing Master's stuff. I love living here near the mountains and the coast. Found out I really DO like long walks on the beach... who knew? My biggest complaint about the NW after living in TX is that it is hard to finde REALLY GOOD mexican food up here. ENough about me for now.
