How to mic live performance to pick up the bass.

Hi

I like to mic live performances or practice sessions, just for a reality check or to learn new material.

I can never get much recorded from the Bass. I suspect part of the problem is that I am using a cheap mic. I only need to record mono.

I know I can record directly from a signal out on my amp, or a sound board, but that does not really give a realistic feeling of whats happening soundwise. with the rest of the group.

I have heard the same comment from a friend that has moved his recording studio from LA to Austin.

I would like to keep this simple, like a cassett recorder and one mic placed somewhere in the room, as I am already lugging around a Peavey 400 head and a cabinet w/0ne 18, and 2 10's. I really don't need to be carrying around much more gear.

I also use a variety of cabinets for different situations. Would the mic selection be relative to the cabinet I am using.
