Howdy!
Ed here … been, um, playing (to be use the term loosely) the electric bass since ’91. Here’s how it happened:
Grew up playing the trumpet – started at the tender age of 6, played heavily through High School and beyond. In college it eventually occurred to me that the trumpet is a downright awful campfire instrument! Not really scoring the chix by whipping out the horn at the frat party … so, I took up the acoustic guitar. Learned well enough to strum a tune - and discovered to my delight that the guitar is a veritable chick magnet - woohoo.
All was well until my wife (ironically, met her in a group where I played horn – HA!) and I wanted to start recording our compositions … we didn’t know any bass players that were readily available, so my wife offered to do it - yeah, right. I bought her a little Epiphone and a Peavey TKO amp … after approx 5 minutes she handed the bass to me and said, “Ooh, this hurts my fingers!” Well, duh. I knew that. So, there you go – I became the bass player. And quickly realized that I was born to play bass!! As I looked back, I could even recall that I would usually sing the bass lines to songs I heard on the radio, go figure.
So, here I am, the “bass player.” Outgrew the Epi, bought myself a beautiful 1991 G&L Legacy LB-1, Leo Fender’s next-generation Precision. Gave away the Peavey and picked up a Hartke 2115 Combo – served me well for many years … just scored my dream rig last year: Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II and a SWR Son of Bertha cab (15 w/horn tweeter). Man, this unit ROCKS! I can’t see myself ever needing anything more.
