Hello everybody
My name is Russ and I have been playing bass for six years now. I started with an Ibanez GSR180 in blue, then got an Ibanez Iceman (which I exchanged the following day for a better series Ibanez in dull green as the Icemans neck was too thin and the neckdive was terrible - impulse buy!) I then got a MIJ P Bass in arctic white that had terrible fret buzz after 2 days - came from a poor music shop though, very corporate and no personal touch. I got my money back for that and instead got a 51 RJ P bass from my local small instrument shop. I foolishly traded this bass in a few years back as I was embarking on adult life (house, marriage, children etc) and a combination of needing the money and not thinking I didn't have the time to play anymore meant I traded it in for £100 (I got done!)
A few months back I got a real hankering to start playing again and remembered I had an old £100 Westfield J Copy in my parents loft so I got it down, cleaned it up etc and now love it! Saying that I do have £400 odd pounds saved up and am looking to get a ''serious'' bass which will last me for a few years and will accomodate my progression through my studies. Suggestions welcome! This time round I have very deliberately veered away from the ''learn a song I like on tab and play it to my family'' tact and have instead started familiarising myself with theory, chords, scales, arpeggios etc. I figure this way I will pick up the songs as I go, just because the form will be recognisable to me by my ''theory studies''. Im also really enjoying playing scales as they're so relaxing and sound so good!
Aside from bass I am interested in reading fantasy novels, I'm an avid Arsenal fan and enjoy listening to all types of music apart from rap and drum and bass/grime etc - however I do recognise the artistic merits of these genres. I have a habit of exploring musicians via youtube etc and have recently discovered Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock - these will introduce me to other musicians and so the cycle starts again
Enough from me peeps, if you've got this far then well done
Thanks for reading, I look forward to getting to know you all real well, real soon
Russ.
