I been bit by the UB bug!!

Hi all,
My name is David Fournier and I just registered on Talk Bass last night.
I have been playing bass (electric) for around 25 years now. Mostly pop, rock, country and more recently some older jazz (django era). I recently have been bit by the upright bass bug and was hoping to get an education from the knowledge base here prior to my buying an upright around Christmas this year.
I am interested in knowing the advantages of an all ply bass as opposed to a hybrid. Also which brands to stay away from. Are the instruments made in Europe any better than those made in the USA or Korea or China etc. etc, etc. In other words I am totally ignorant and need all the knowledge I can get. Regarding electric bass I am self taught. However I did take several years of guitar lessons from some very good jazz players and was headed in that direction untill I filled in for a bassist and fell in love with the instrument. I also took one year of music at the local community college so I have a pretty good knowledge chords and theory. I still own my guitar but use it mostly for writing. Bass is clearly my first love. When I get an upright I intend to take lessons right away as I have enough bad habits already and don't want to transfer them to the upright. If anyone can suggest a good instructor in the Oregon I-5 Corridor from Eugent to Salem (or even Portland) that would be great. Anyway....That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

David

Hope you enjoy it here. There's a bunch of great people on the boards with tons to talk about.

Please take this time to review the rules of the forum, if you haven't already.

Also, remember to view the stickies at the top of each sub-forum to check for other FAQ and poicies in place.

Happy Posting!

Welcome. I was recently bit by the same bug. Less than a month ago actually.

I did research on the DB side of the forums. Found a teacher. Got a lesson. Needed a bass of my own for practice. So I bought a bass too.

I bought a plywood Strunal brand upright. It's a Czech bass. It was arround 2300 Canadian dollars, so about 2000 USD. Getting into upright and buyig one was best decision of my adult life so far. (I've only been 18 for 6 months). It's a very good bass; my teacher recommended it.

I got a book to practice with called Simandl New Method for String Bass Part 1. I enjoy practicing double bass so much more than electric. And it also makes electric bass feel like nothing, physically.

Good luck with DB, Talkbass is a great help. Too bad there's not a lot of activity on the DB side of the forums.

See ya around.
