I've started to play guitar a couple of times, but never followed through. However, I'm helping some friends out who do have a band as I love to research and buy stuff. Doesn't help my musicianship any, but my buddies are heading towards having some pretty good equipment and a pretty good sounding band (The Scattered Panties...).
If you want to help their 16 y.o. bass player (a really good kid) choose a quality 5-string electric,
you can read through this amazingly long post loaded with pertinent details.
I've seen a few hundred bands live and I apologise for not being a musician. But I respect people who are, and appreciate the joy they give me as I listen to great music.
Who am I listening to now? Melodic folk (viking?) Metal. Is this new to America? I was too old to "get" Metallica, but, aside from the "harsh" vocals, I think this stuff is kind of neat:
Examples:
Ensiferum, "Wanderer"
I like the bass player, fingertapping his 6-string along with the guitarist, at the end of this song:
Ensiferum, "White Storm"
Otherwise, I'm into
- The Go-Go's (much better live than you would ever imagine),
- The Donnas (certainly my favorite live band ever for sheer entertainment at a low price),
- Little Big Town, and
- Blackmore's Night.
