Hi,
I am new to the forums but have been playing bass for several years. I probably have a few hundred shows under my belt on bass, playing all-originals. It's not that I've never played a cover, it's just I can count those times on no more than two hands.
I had the good fortune that my first bass was and still is my only bass. I have a G&L SB-2 that I bought new and have abused for quite some time without it ever failing. I worked for the summer of 1990 to buy it. It's kind of like a P-Bass with a Jazz neck on it. I bought it, played it for a week and then put it in the closet for a year. Then someone told me that they needed a bass player. I said that I owned a bass. They said, great, you're the bass player. I played for a year and the band folded and I put the bass back in the closet.
Then one of the other bands in town lost their bass player and asked me if I would fill in. I told them I would do it for a couple of weeks, but nothing permanent, and ended up doing it for several years.
I traveled and toured, flirted with labels and met the friendliest people in the world. I taught myself to record. I opened my own music store. I produced my band's last cd. Then the drummer sort of flaked out and the guitarist couldn't ignore starting a good job with the phone company. So, I never really got to release it. I still think I could have sold quite a few copies of it. But the singer and myself decided to start all over. We just wanted, I suppose, to forget about the past and do something different. We're still going today.
I have to admit, that for the last couple of years, I have not been much of a bass player, but just a guy that owns a bass.
Now, I want to change that. I found this forum, I rebuilt my rig and I decided it's time to really learn the instrument. I'll always keep an orange dunlop pick handy, but now I plan to put those fingers to work too!
Wish me luck. |
