Just a little girl playing the bass

Good evening. :]

My pseudonym is Athena and I have been playing the Upright Bass for over seven years (mostly orchestral but some jazz).

However, some time in high school, I stopped playing and learning in orchestras and casually plucked once in a while for fun, never really advancing my skill or knowledge of the instrument.

Today, I was somewhat scolded by an old man not to touch his "precious" cello bow because it was two thousand dollars. I apologized, but I thought to myself, "No way.. it can't be that much." Back when I bought my first bass in 2003, my bow was only sixty dollars.

I went online and read up on the value of some instruments and completely missed out how beautiful, expensive, and amazing they are! And my bass (even though for a poor family was expensive), is at the bottom of quality. In fact, I'm not even sure what type of quality it has!

So, despite my lack of knowledge for the string world and my detachment from the music world for the past three years, an epiphany arose inside me and I decided not only to play again more seriously, but to take something that I once loved with all my heart as a little girl, and learn about how awesome this instrument really is and has been for hundreds of years.

But, to summarize it all:
I'm a nineteen year old girl from Southern California.
I play on a Strunal 3/4 bass with a German bow (which is probably too big for me after much thought; I'm 5'3")
I'm in college to become a teacher and... that's it! :]

My favorite songs are The Tempest and Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven, Greensleeves, and Canon in D major by Johann Pachelbel.

Nice to meet you. :]
