HI All...I've been playing again for about two years after having put it down 20 years ago to go on the road and support my partners band..Needless to say I'm over being "with the band" and since my kids are getting older I decided it was my time to play again..I've gone through more than a half a dozen basses looking for the feel and sound I want and have found a few that have been keeps..kind of frustrated starting so late in the game and I really want to learn jazz, funk, theory, but I'm getting my feet wet again and ajmmin with a punk group havng a blast..This seems like a great place to come and read and learn so thanks all for sharing you space with me here.

| | | | I'm with ya as far as being a little "older" in the game but let me encourage you to keep on keepin on! 2 years ago when I was 38 is when I started caring about music more than just as a way to pass the time. I wasted 23 years goofing off and catching up has been a pain but useful. Good luck

What do you have for basses & amps now?

| | | Thank you for the Welcome..
I've got an Ernie Ball Stingray that I use regularly and the sound works for what we play. I have a Fender MIM jazz and a USA Fender p (beautiful, too pretty to play almost), I have a little Ibanez sr3 for a spare and I just plunked a deposit down on an 83 Precision Elite that I fell in love with..seems to be becoming a sickness pretty quickly. I have an old Superbassman head and a bandmaster cab dated between 69 and 73..and a backline 110 for practicing in the house....somewhere in the midst of it all I had a living room and a dining room and they seem to have been over run..I think I have a couple of kids somewhere under the drumset and the 3 six string things in here somewhere..lol |

| | | | Ahhh a kindred spirit! I have a similar past. I was in metal bands in Hollywood in the 80"s and eventually headed east to do wedding gigs. I liked getting paid to play!! But eventually top 40 became so distasteful to me that I quit playing altogether for 15 years. I've been back playing again for a year now, my chops are almost back and my band is doing really well!.
Good luck to you and keep it up! The world needs all the bottom end it can hold. |

Welcome, and have a great time re-discovering bass.

| | | | Hmmm...melancholy now- I spent most of the 80's "with" the band, fell in love with the bass, but alas more in love with a boy who felt of course my place was "with" as opposed to "in the band"...bless his old unsigned cover playin heart I still miss him from time to time and probably still have some of his black eyeliner and Aquanet in a trunk somewhere..
So I'm 41 now, smarter, and holdin up the butt of an original punk gig, probably not even very good but the creative process has brought out the best in me and go figure- my sons' friends actually think I'm kind of a cool Mom...lol...my kids don't of course-....Glad I found this place...

I wish I could say it was time sacrificed for a good reason...I was playing out of Seattle during the grunge heydey and got caught up in the trappings. Cliche? Maybe so, a junkie bassist in the decade of angst....Anyway I cleaned up got married and have returned to music with a vengeance. I somtimes grieve lost time and missed opporrtunity, but I play better now than ever and have so much appreciation and gratitude for a second chance. Its never too late to rock!!! Just belive and play what you feel! |
