My name is Kevin M. Callihan, Sr. I have no fear, nor any unhealthy relationships, and speak the truth [so being in denial about anything on TalkBass Forums] will not come from me.
This forum stemmed from my involvement with the FDP forum recommended by a Fender representative several years ago.
Now I am ready to start playing bass again and seek advice and guidance in buying the right bass for me after deliberative dialogue with you.
A good introduction, for me, is the best way to start a constructive thread of communication that runs so true among all of us: TalkBass.
My love started with upright bass after being recruited in 1965to the small town high school band to replace the one [tuba] player in the concert band. The 'peer groups' in the sixth grade were angry because they took me a mile or so at the end of the day from grade school to 'complete' the high school band. From that point, it was Jazz bass and respect for pure bassists regardless of their preferences of instrument or technique; I simply loved being the part of the rhythm that gave 'the gut power' of creative and progressive constant strength. As John McLaughlin said once in Eric Clapton's Crossroads 'mission' for his Cotton Bowl DVD, "music is the international language of the human spirit." I agree and know so as a bass player.
I found my place with the upright bass then different electric bass guitars that was suspended for a time [18 years of age to 51 years of age] for education, helping others in a noble profession, having a 'stroke' and wake-up call, then coming back to education to 'continually cultivate and improve the QUALITY of my mind'.
One of my goals in integrating my cognitive abilities in a restorative manner is through the use of my passion in playing the bass [which has never left me]. Our family mission has a template [or foundation/mission if you will] on the discipline and study of music in college and our oldest is ready to begin studies in the department of music at Morehead State University in Kentucky. We are an intact family; however, divorced so distance exists as my post-doctoral work is in Athens at OHIO University.
It is great to meet everyone. Our son [17] and daughter [14] have been behind the 88 black and whites since the age of five and they KNOW my rehabilitation in body, mind, spirit, and soul will come from picking up the Bass again. Because music helped me learn before in secondary education to be a better person in every discipline of study, I know it is 'the next right thing to do' at this point in my life of remaining useful, respected, and loved among nonjudgmental human beings [musicians] during my remaining years.
Many 'feelings and goals' exist for me. I have been told by those friends and loved ones that "successful people do not quit" and they bring up my proven abilities so many years ago on the Bass. This is not a 'narcissistic' reflection but an introduction to being a genuine member of this forum.
I appreciate you and this forum.
