gentleplayers,
i'm a bass noob

been playing drums since i was 10, i'm 46 now
i bought a genuine steinberger L2 in 1986, plucked at it in vain for 10 years and sold it

but...... there's this autonomous inner me that is driven to play bass guitar, so i recently bought it another axe
i picked up a Warwick Corvette Rockbass and I couldn't be happier with it
alder body, maple neck, MEC actives, big bridge, nice tuners, what's not to like?
i have a fretless wenge neck in my shop for it btw
i listen to classical music in my car and african reggae everywhere else
violin music can make me lose track of time and space, i have a weakness for it played well
african reggae encompasses all of my musical preferences, from the melodies to the messages
i've seen many great musical artists in my time, Miles Davis, Buddy Rich, Frank Zappa, Bob Marley and yes.....i got to see Jaco play with both Joni and Weather Report....there are no words....
the challenge:
i've always had a mental block for the fingerboard and keyboard, but my mind is set to break down that door once and for all
i've been spending my nights playing for hours on end, learning scales, hopefully I'm not developing too many bad habits in the meantime
i have plenty of percussive rhythm, that hand is doing fine, the other one just needs to know where to go on the fingerboard
once I get a few practical miles under my belt I'll seek a bass teacher in my area, that's my plan and I'm sticking to it
for the moment I'm enjoying the heck out of the bass and what i'm learning, really digging it a lot!
the goal:
i want to play thoughtfully and melodically....by myself...in the dark
nothing more
currently playing through my Boss BR1180 Ten-Track recorder into my Alesis studio monitors, which really kicks *ss......just kidding, ackshally for practice it's more than fine
my next acquisition (oh, pardon my gas) is an amp, I came here, in part, for input in that regard......
i'll find the appropriate place to post that question and go at it that way, since this is the intro spot
i've been building contemporary furniture for my entire career, mostly wood, but lots of glass and metal too
have spent time in many forested places including North, Central and South America, West Africa and many tropical islands in many remote places
i could be described as a tropical wood expert, woohoo
i work wood naturally, it is easy for me, the scope of my work is huge but I still revere one woodworker above all others, the mighty
luthier(cue angelic voices)
so that's who I am.....
kindly feel free to offer your collective advice on opening my mind to the bottom line
thanks in advance!
