Salut, all.
I've been lurking about TB for about two weeks or so now. Figured I'd at least introduce myself and thank the community at large for the wealth of knowledge contributed here on a daily basis. I've learned a lot in the short time I've lingered about these parts already.
For myself, I'm new to the world of bass. Well, at least new to doing it for real. I've had my lil' black P-Bass for probably six years but only got it originally just to have some low end to put behind tracks I'd lay down while writing and recording to my digital Portastudio.
As of about five weeks ago, I came to the realization that I enjoy playing bass. I mean, I really love it. As in - why the @)($*@ hadn't I figured this out before?
In previous bands I've played drums (my first and longest running role in music), rhythm guitar (more of a hobby but not serious), and backing vocals. Never before had I fronted a band, or played bass on stage.
Now, I'm in the situation where I'll be doing both. Began writing a lot of songs with a guitar playing friend lately, and we've had so much fun with it, we're going to make it a full blown band/project/call-it-what-you-will. So now I find myself doing another first - looking for a drummer. (I've always been on the other end of that).
And I just can't get enough of bass. I'm 31 now, and it feels like I'm 17 again. I'm excited about gear again, and musician mags. I stay up until 1am, sometimes 2am when I have to be up at 6am for work - just playing and practicing and writing.
Where have you been all my life, bass? And why did you wait til just now to bat your low-end lashes my way?
Now comes the joy of researching to find my first bass amp / cabinet / pre / effects (pedals or racks? Dunno).
I look forward to gleaning all I can from the eons of collective experience around TB.
~Scott
