New to bass, guitar, and music in general. Willing to learn and work, though

I really couldn't find a title and the fact that it's past 2 in the morning doesn't help.

Anyways, I made an account on this site about... two weeks ago? I just now found this part of the forum and decided it still wasn't too late to post here.
Anyways, just so we can get acquainted, my name's Dakota. I'm a 14 year old guy, approaching his sophomore year in High School. In addition, I write monthly for the local newspaper. I've been playing Guitar since last September, and got my bass late last month. I've wanted to play bass since before I got guitar (figured it would be good training to learn guitar a bit first) and I love them both. My guitar may be suffering from neglect, actually, since getting my bass, but I've been keeping it tuned and maintained at the least.

As far as music goes, I'm a big fan of metal. A lot of people probably wince at that, but I'd like to think I keep it tasteful. Sure, I enjoy the thrash of bands like Killswitch Engage from time to time, but my favorite is symphonic/progressive. Mostly European, and a lot having female singers.
As far as playing music, I'd like to play a progressive type of genre. This includes earlier, softer stuff inclduing Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Rush. Being into the metal, I'd like to play these genres with a more metal tinge to them. To this end, I also like bands like Dream Theater and Tool (some would argue Tool being progressive).

Anyways, that's basically all about me. Also, as a summer project, I'd like to refinish a bass or possibly build one from a kit (I'd like to build one from scratch, but I have no experience even with tools, and that will have to come later.) If you're interested with helping me out, even just over the internet, the thread can be found here: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showth...29#post9283429
