New bass owner, got a couple of questions!

Greetings,

I just got my first electric bass guitar last week! It is a 4 string Stagg, pretty much a starter model. I have no idea what I am doing, but gotta start somewhere.

2 questions!
Can I string a B string on my guitar, and remove the highest string?

Also, are there any standards on down tuning?

The reason I ask these is because I tried out some songs I have, the easiest ones. I noticed my guitar can't go as low as some of the notes in these songs, not even with the deepest note on the deepest string. A friend said either down tune it or get a B string.

I think I better get more advice first, before I go any further.

Before you start messing with down-tuning and restringing your guitar with only one thicker B string, I would concentrate on learning fundamentals like scales, notes on the fretboard, intervals and all that good stuff before you jump into all that. When i first started I worried about all that stuff too, but it's much better in the long run to just work on the fundamentals at first so that way later on you can really USE the lower string and down tuning to your advantage.
