Hello everybody
Female beginner bass player here.
I had my bass playing dreams squished by my folks as a child, because I was a very short little girl who thought double basses are the coolest thing out there and anything short of full sized ones are just not the same thing. So I played the piano instead.

Now as an adult ... sort of, 24 years of age and still very short, I realized that I can do whatever I want and got myself the prettiest electric bass that I could find in the music store (Yamaha BEX4). Started two weeks ago with 'itsy bitsy spider', can now play more interesting stuff. My husband thinks I play more with the bass than with him, but that's just something he'll have to get used to

You are too cool (female bass players rock)! Welcome aboard, don't spend more time reading the forums then practicing. Find others to jam with ASAP (remember, the root always works). And lastly, have fun.

Tell him that later he will learn to appreciate the value of the strength in your hands that playing bass gives!

Like you I studied piano for years ( I still suck on keys) until playing bass (started on upright). But no matter how badly you play, there is nothing as valuable musically as studying piano. A piano has it all. Both clefs, rhythm, harmony, melody, percussion, groove, strings and wonderful low notes. That really gives you a head start on all those people who just start learning the facts of bass.

So welcome to the world of bass and to TB. There are a great bunch of guys where with extensive knowledge of just about every aspect of bass. Don't be afraid to ask your questions. When you are a beginner no question is a "dumb question".

I love hearing stories about people who follow their interests and enthusiasm -- even if they're no longer kids.

Hope you have a ball with it.

Remember that music's an art and a passion. Take as long as you like to figure out the mechanics of playing; just don't let nay-sayers (or worse: internal judgement) put you off. If you keep your eye (and ear) on the joy of it, you'll do great!

Rock on. (Jazz on/salsa on/folk on/ hell, polka on! :^)
