Just subbed after googling for "bass player's forum". 30 years ago, I played in a 5-piece purist chicago-style blues band. Sold everything. Started playing again a few years back, bought a used Alembic Spoiler (fab axe) & took it to blues jams and a sort-of start-up of the old band. Found that I couldn't reach what I used to be able to reach. Light went on: the last bass (Gibson EB-O) was a short-scale instrument, and the Spoiler wasn't.

Located a short-scale Alembic, bought it: 30-year-old Series I. Even fabber than the Spoiler. Took it to the same jams (the old band's other members had Family Issues and couldn't play with any regularity), and can now reach what I couldn't. Just put new strings on it, and it sounds even better!

I have been described as "old school". I don't do slaps & pops. I don't think it is a guitar. I keep time, try to listen to & complement the drummer and the lead. And have a sh*tload of fun every Tuesday night. (They give free beer to anyone who plays ... and it is a brewpub, so the beer's worth the effort.)
