Folks:
My name's Otto, and I just joined the list. I've played electric bass since 1983 and Chapman Stick since about 1985. I've owned and played an acoustic double bass but don't have one right now. In fact, the reason I heard about TalkBass was that I was searching for more info on the new WAV 4 electric upright bass from NS Designs and found the "megathread" here on TB. Good stuff!
My only electric bass is an old Gibson Ripper fretted bass with a natural wood finish, two pickups and the four position selector. It's a wonderful and versatile electric bass. I record mainly direct into a Great River preamp that is also a DI, and my amp is an old Traynor Bass Master tube amp into a 1x12 cabinet I made from an old Peavey PA column. It is a closed cab with an Eminence driver specifically chosen to give critically damped (Q=0.7) response in that size of box, along with a Motorola piezo tweeter. It's got a nice, even tone (even in the low end) due to the acoustic suspension design.
I've been creating and recording my own music since 1983 (I play other instruments and attempt to sing on occasion), mainly on open reel tape recorders, until the last year or so, when I added a DAW and sold some of the tape gear. I still use a 3M M-79 1/2" 4-track and am restoring an old 3M M-23 1/4" 2-track.
I don't have a lot more to add at this point, but I'll be around from time to time when family, work and music allow!
Cheers,
Otto |
