Hi All,

I just joined today. Hope to learn some. Not much to pass along yet. I have been playing for only about 4 mos. (have played guitar for nearly 30 years). In a band w/friends and bass was what was needed. It may actually suit my talents more, but it is still pretty alien to me. When I listen to music, the guitar is what my brain hears. I have to concentrate to hear what the bass is doing. I have certainly learned a lot about the role bass plays in the band (sort of alt.country - from Lucinda Williams/Gram Parsons/Steve Earle/Scott Miller to Drive-By Truckers/Uncle Tupelo/Ryan Adams, with hints of Ramones/Clash and off-beat classic rock).

I use mostly older Peavey stuff cuz it's usually cheap and durable. I don't have much of a feel for how to get a good sound or tone. I twiddle a bit at home, but the gear sounds so different at shows I don't know what to change. I need to start paying more attention to local shows and bass set-ups. As a listener I really like a lot of very low register, but it doesn't suit all material. I try to play most of our covers fairly faithful to the original, at least in feel. I end up trying to add more interesting timing changes in there, as that's the way I play guitar; very percussive.

Offer any tips you can. My Mark VIII head has decent eq options.
