hi
i had as a present a jb. it's a fender highway1. as a beginner can you tell me the main differences between a jb and p-bass. why are bassplayers more or less splitted between jb and p-bass style supporters?

Many reasons, 3KBs.

Sound, feel, style.....as in the difference between any bass guitars.
I think some people like the "J" because they feel it's a bit more versitle, or it's the "other" Fender, kinda a cool style thing.
All comes down to a matter of personal taste, or, what comes into your hands! LOL!
I'd be happy with a "J", I think you will be, too!

Enjoy!
