| New member wants to know best way to mic DB

I joined this forum initially to find someone who can tell me the best way to mic my son's double bass. Our family band is playing more and more contra dance gigs. I currently mic him with an AKG 1000 condensor mic (I try to get him to keep the mic about one to two inches from the bass. I used to use an audio-technica pro 35 clip on condensor (same mic I currently use on my other sons's fiddle). However, I got distortion when using it. Should I consider going to something like a Realistic? It would be nice to have a permanently attached mic.
