New/Old Bass Player Wannabe

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello All,

Well, new in that I've never played bass before my wife bought me a Sterling4 and a Mesa Carbine Combo a week or so ago. Old in that I'm 59 now, and am just starting bass as she also says I need a hobby as I approach retirement. I have played regular guitar off and on over the years. The Sterling is here at home but the Mesa is still several weeks away, on order, so I'm using a glorified transistor radio just to make noise with. I hope I can make some intelligible music with the bass before I'm finally off the planet. I still like the same 'ol stuff, classic rock, 60s' R&B & Soul, SRV, blues, a little country and maybe some church stuff.

Sorry to ramble, seems like a great forum.

Best To All,
Sterling4

Welcome. Lots of good information here.

Pick up a Tascam CD player (MP3 available too). It plays CDs through headphones and has an input for your bass. That way you can practice along with familiar tunes.

I would suggest you start taking lessons. Just to learn the basics, thumb and hand positions, basic reading skills. etc.

Finally, what a cool wife, and you ain't so old. There's lots of us still playing.

Hey, as long as you're having fun and enjoy what you do, keep at it. In a bit you'll be good enough to play in a band!

Here are a few links that I've collected along the way that I've found enlightening and hope you will as well.
Good luck.
