Hey guys, newbie here. Posting this in the Basses section to show off my new bass and get tips; also posted in the introductions area. I am a guitar player who recently became interested in bass guitar and ended up buying a used E-Series MIJ Squier Jazz bass from a friend for $100 with a Fender hard case included. Knowing guitars as I do, I knew it was too good a deal to pass up as I have an E-series MIJ Fender Strat from the same era. I know a lot of guitarists kinda suck at bass but I am trying to really learn to play it and approach it as a bass player even though guitar is my primary instrument. I play mostly rock, metal, blues, and country so that would be my focus.
Any recommendations of good bassists to listen to in those genres? I enjoy guys like Victor Wooten and Jaco but I have no interest in becoming a virtuoso or playing jazz or slap bass so as much as I enjoy those types of music, I am not as interested in those guys right now as I am looking to learn to compliment the music I play. Some of my current favorites are John Paul Jones, Duff McKagan, Rob Trujillo, Paul McCartney, Geddy Lee and Darryl Jones.
Any pointers besides "Don't play it like a guitar?" Obviously I am more inclined to play with a pick being a guitarist but I would also like to learn to play with my fingers. Any tips for that as well?
Thanks for reading and I look forward to being a member here and learning the bass!
Quick I-Pod shot of my "new" bass; I need to get a better pic of it...
