Gentlemen, I'm new to the forums. Last time I picked up a bass was in the late 90's when I was in a HS garage band. I obviously never thought to actually LEARN the instrument back then. Here I am almost 15 years older and a little more patient. I'd like to start from the beginning and really learn the instrument. I picked up a $200 used bass to practice on. Any pointers of advice, would do me great (i need all the help I can get!)

Thanks
-Sol

Hey Sol,

Your story's a lot like mine -- I fooled around with the instrument in high school and then only just am getting back into it now, fifteen years later. I am loving it! I think it shows that it's never too late to try something new or revisit an old love, however corny that sounds. What kinds of stuff do you like to play?

Browse the forums and especially the sticky threads on top; they're a great source of information.

I found this a fun place to start: http://www.dmanlamius.com/

Pointers

First of all, welcome to the forum, im new to TB myself.. but here is some pointers:

You will need a lot of patience to start making your bass lines and playing with the bass, specially if you played any instrument before the bass.

First: exercise, exercise, exercise, exercise, exercise and then exercise some more. There are great exercises on the web (if know hoe to read a tablature), try www.ultimate-guitar.com and search for bass exercise in the lessons part.

Second: Try to play with all your 4 fingers of your left hand (yes, pinky too!!) slides sound cool, i know but you need to work your pinky finger because if you do, you won't be stuck at a later level when you trying to develop some speed

Three: always, i mean ALWAYS use your right hand fingers instead of a pick. at first you will find it tedious and boring because you will miss the strings a lot and your fingers forearm muscles will hurt, but thats just a matter of keep trying and practice

But the most important thing you need to do is, regardless of the exercises and the praticing and so on, you need to like, or even love what you are doing, without passion there is no music

well that being said, I wish you good luck and my sour fingers

rock on

P.S: sorry for my english.. it's not my main language :P

Welcome back to the essential part of the rhythm section and welcome to TB. There are many stored bits of knowledge in the 'stickies' at the top of each form. There are also plenty of opinions and more than a few laughs.

In regards to pointers, set up a practice routine where you build hand strength and dexterity. Work with a click to get figure out where you typically rush/lag and work on it as you develop your manual skills.

A regular routine should include, warm up exercises, scales, arpeggios, and then some play alongs/tabs/reading whatever, and then some play time just to joke around.

You might want to read some music theory:

http://cnx.org/content/m10856/latest/
http://library.thinkquest.org/15413/.../intervals.htm
http://www.musiclearningworkshop.com...ry-scales.html

What kind of bass do you have? $ 200 can buy a pretty nice used bass.
