pdxhayes isn't a bassist...

Ok, as the title says, I'm not a bassist. I did buy a used fender bass just a week ago, and I plink on it a bit...

I'm not really even much of a musician. I play the drums, but I'm not in a band, I don't gig, and I don't record...

"*** brings you here?", you might ask. Well, I did buy the bass... but actually I'm here researching whether to DIY refurbish my amp, or pay somebody else to do it for me.

I inherited this amp (Ampeg B-15 S) a few years back, but until I picked up the bass, it sat covered in my closet. Now that I have the bass, the music room is complete (Drums, piano, guitar and bass). I pulled the inherited amp out of the closet, and once it warmed up, it had a great sound. Granted, I had to wiggle the dials a bit to get the hum and crackle go go away... but as long as I keep it under 3, I can actually be in the tiny 15x15 room while playing. If I take it over 3, I have to stand out in the hallway and play. It also has a tendency to make my drums rattle if I go too loud.

So, the crux of the matter, is that a couple of the dials are sticky, and I don't like the crackle or hum. I imagine it could use some refurbishing... perhaps some new bulbs and / or power supply?

What do you guys think? Do I risk F'ing it up while trying to fix it up? Should I leave it to the pros? Where is a *good* place to get bulbs? Oh yeah, and what the heck is the "S" designation in "B-15 S" stand for?

Thanks for the info! Here is a pic of my setup.

You can get some spray potentiometer (POT} cleaner at Radio shack and follow the directions.

Here are a few links that I've collected along the way that I've found enlightening and hope you will as well.

Getting the most out of TB
------------------------------------
Read as many of the FAQ's as you can. Lots of good info there.

If you haven't already, fill out your "User Profile", especially the equipment you own. Many TB'rs will check out your equipment list and music influences before posting an answer to a thread you create.

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/faq.ph...#faq_faq_slang Slang/abbreviations, forum usage, TB maint., posting. Note: On TB, GAS means Gear Aquisition Syndrome.
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/faq.ph...#faq_faq_slang TB rules

Searching TB
------------------
So many topics have already been covered on TB, that it is always suggested that you try a search before you create a new thread. The internal search feature of TB is limited to words 3 characters or more. There is always the Google search option that utilizes Google search features. One of the best ways to search Talkbass.com is to use Google's Advanced Search parameters. Putting the year in your search terms is one way to limit the number of responses to a search. You can check it out at Google.com.

Subscribing to TB threads
----------------------------------
Note: in your "MyTalkBass" control panel, there is a menu selection "Edit Options". When you click on "Edit Options", one of the choices is for "Default Thread Subscription Mode".

I find it usefull to choose "Daily email notification" mode. What this does is to send you an email for each thread you post a reply to so you can follow subsequent replies without having to log on to TB. You can susbscribe to individual threads manually as you come across info that interests you but doing it manually takes time.

For threads that interest you for which you don't want to post a reply, post a reply with "subscribed" in the reply box. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Receiving email notification of Private Messages
------------------------------------------------------------------
Also within the "Edit Options" page, you can setup TB to send you an email when you receive a Private Message (PM). This is very helpful if you don't log on regularly. I've received replies to a PM I sent months later just because of this situation.

Stumbo, UDAMAN!!! That has got to be the best 'Welcome To Talkbass' thread that I've ever seen!

pdxhayes, if I am correct in assuming that you are in Portland Oregon, then you should definitely take that in to Jim at Amphead if you find that it needs any work. I've found him to be completely honest and fair, plus a great guy...

Nice rig!

Stumbo: Thanks for the info... I bookmarked my own introduction thread so I can keep you list handy when I want reading material.

rllefbv: Thanks for the "Jim @ Amphead" tip. I think I have decided to let a pro handle it, and it's nice to get a recommendation.
