That's really your preference. I must admit that when playing really fast music a pick makes it A LOT easier. However, when you use a pick, your bass tends to sound slightly different. It has more of a punch to it. Which is better just depends on if you like the sound or not.

i rekon...its easier 2 use fingers coz the fingerwalkin method makes it easier 2 control and can b pretty fast. altho it can b fun playin wif a pic i haf trouble with hitting the rite strings. thats y im NOT a guitarist.

Thumbs up

Hmm, i prefer a pick for the faster, heavier rock stuff but lately my band have started doing all these soul covers, marvin gaye and the like, and the delivery i get through my fingers is much nicer, all depends on personal preference, i think

Generally, I only use a pick if the song requires the added articulation. Fingers sound better and I've never had a problem with speed, though I haven't played any old Metallica in quite some time.

Guitar was my first instrument and it took me six years to realise that extended range bass is, instead, my calling. I was never able to break the pick habit. I say experimentation is going to be the most informative approach. Don't worry about conventions just yet. Have some fun and once you find your grove, then see about streamlining it with technical direction.

I just about exclusively pick. I can't play with my fingers worth a lick, except the most basic slowest of lines. Besides, I really like the punchy sound from picking and when a deeper bass tone is required my Sunn 2000S provides it so deep and bassy you would never know I was picking.
