On a whim I picked up a used bass, GR 200, last Sunday. I have no musical background, though I can read tab from the month a I putzed around on a guitar 18 years ago.
I have always liked bass and figured it'd be fun to learn. I have no plans to ever jam. I'm looking at this as more of an opportunity to expand my horizons a bit.
I'm not really a huge fan of any particular bassist(yet). The one I happen to like the most is the bass player of Gwar, no clue what the guys real name is... Probably not a common pick but I like how his bass lines seem to stand out in their music.
As for musical tastes. I listen to things ranging from the Cars, Moody Blues, REO Speedwagon, Pink Floyd through Metallica, Gwar, Sacred Reich, and Sepultura. I really like Apocalyptica, the 3 - 4 guys that play cellos, alot too.
I have a pretty basic game plan. I picked up fasttrack Bass 1 and Bass for Dummies. So far I like the mix. Bass for Dummies has a set of excercises for each hand that will really pay off. I figure the two will leverage each other. I also plan to start taking lessons. This is probably the most critical thing so I don't develop any really bad habits.
I'm already dreaming about the day I can justify a nice new bass
-edited out bass problems as it's resolved
