Rambling intro and GAS rant

Shame, shame on Talkbass.

I found this site while Googling for something bass-related and pretty much have not left since. I've supposedly been "working at home" for the past few weeks, which means I'm getting paid to browse this site. Don't tell anybody.

I used to play in a RAWK band some years ago, and then an Urban FolkŪ outfit after that, but quit some years ago and have have been dormant ever since. A fill-in gig with the folk band, and talk of a reunion and overseas jaunt with the RAWK band have gotten my juices flowing again. That coincided with getting my Lull-converted-to-unlined-fretless Ibanez Roadstar out to prep it for sale, but instead I played it every day for a couple of months.

In that time I realized I no longer have what might qualify as "Pro Gear," so I began looking around to see what's out there. And the GAS pains have not let up.

I bought a set of Sadowsky pickups for my Yamaha BBN5 from a TBer, and some Infeld Superalloys from the bargain bin of the local music store, both of which I learned about on TB. TransFORMED that bass into a usable instrument. And I raised the action on it, per suggestions on TB. Left hand sufferes a little, but I can dig in more with the right. Tone is improved!

I have an old GK 400RB that I really, really like. Simple, sounds good to my ears, does what I want it to do. I recently got a Bag End S15-D, in the interests of lighter weight and more thump than I remember ever getting from my long-gone Carvin 410T, and (after one gig) I think it was a good move.

But now the rock band thing. Two loud guitars. Will one S15 be enough? Oh, Hey! There's another S15D for sale used, locally. I should snap it up! Wait, there's a Schroeder 1212R for sale too. What the heck is that? [check talkbass.com] Sounds intriguing. Slightly heavier than the S15D, but perhaps clearer in the mix? I'll check it out (tonight at 6pm). Wait, one 1212 at 55lbs, vs. 2 S15s at 44lbs...? Is that more or less effort overall?

But I want to get into some kind of funk-y outfit, something that makes people want to shake their fun parts. Will that 1212R work? Hmm. I'll see what I think tonight.

But then, will my 400RB have enough power to drive it? [check talkbass.com] Oooh, maybe not. Upgrade! I like GK -- 800RB maybe? 700RB? But I don't want all that bi-amp-y stuff I won't use; just give me a big fat mono channel.

[check talkbass.com] Ashdown! No, wait -- Thunderfunk! No, wait -- Tube Works! No, wait -- Genz Benz!

Dang. I could drive myself nuts with this before ever playing a gig. I'm like that.

I know this isn't the forum for advice, and I'm not really asking. I'm just babbling. And if you've read this far, I seriously wonder why.

So that's me. Consider me introduced.

Thanks to everyone on and behind Talkbass.com. I'm excited about playing bass again, and TB has contributed mightily to that.

Cheers,
Steve
