Unhappy Removing front bow from vintage guitar

Sign in to disble this ad
I discovered after inheriting my father's 1962 Gibson Les Paul SG electric guitar that it had a what I would describe as a kink rather than a bow. The neck is straight out from the boby to the 12th fret, then the neck starts a very slight incline to the nut, approx. a 1/16 in. front bow/rise occurs from fret 12 to the base of the nut. The guitar has been in its original hard case since the 70s, hidden under blankets in a closet, lying on its back in the hard case, and so it appears that the undersupport for the neck within the case has caused the neck to bow due to imbalance in downpressure on either side of the neck support. Should i just tighten the truss nut with a wrench i can get from the guitar shop, or should I trust someone to steam/clamp or do what they deem necessary to fix it. I get nervous letting this guitar out of my sight/hands when leaving it at a shop. Thoughts?
